What is Museum Africa?

Museum AfricaFounded in 2005, Museum Africa is a combination museum and library destined to house the world's largest collection of primary source documents, books and artifacts pertaining to continental Africa's history. Its primary function is to provide public access and a centralized location for conducting research on individual African cultures. Museum Africa will operate two vibrant campuses: Chicago Metropolitan Museum and Library of African History and Kush University Library, both in Chicago.

Originally designed to occupy a fourteen-acre stretch of land that was the home of a former college on Chicago's South Side, Museum Africa currently is a virtual museum. When a suitable location becomes available, Museum Africa will stand as a vibrant and lasting tribute to the life and times of ancient African civilizations and the people who created and developed them.

When the time comes, please tour Museum Africa, starting with a stroll through our atrium conservatory, where you can view and marvel at the myriad flora and fauna found in ancient and modern Africa. After that, take in the more than 200,000 exhibits in the museum, or browse our library, containing the largest collection of primary source documents created by Africa's most important writers, artists, historians, philosophers, and political figures.

Rest awhile before browsing our Museum Store and purchasing any number of books, souvenirs and apparel. At this point, you may want to enjoy an informative lecture about ancient Africa in the Moussa Diallo Children's Theater and Lecture Hall. Finally, savor the entire experience over lunch in our African-themed Cafe Soul restaurant, where excellent chefs create menus based on authentic African cuisines!

Students and scholars can also arrange to conduct research using our collection of historical materials chronicling civilizations.
